Backup Practice:  Normal Backup

  1. Establish Practice Files to Back Up
    1. Download "Practice Files.zip" to your "My Documents" (or "Documents") folder
      1. If your web browser downloads to your Desktop, move the file into your Documents folder (open it first if necessary)
    2. Open your Documents folder, so you see "Practice Files.zip" in the window
    3. Right-click on "Practice Files.zip"
    4. Click "Extract All..."
    5. The Extraction Wizard starts
      1. Click "Next"
      2. Under "Select a Destination":
        1. No need to change the destination; we're already in your Documents folder
        2. Click "Next"
        3. The Files extract
      3. Under "Extraction Complete":
        1. Next to "Show extracted files" clear the check-box [  ]
        2. Click "Finish"
  2. Insert USB flash drive
  3. Launch Windows Backup
    1. Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup
  4. "Backup or Restore Wizard" starts
    1. Click "Next"
  5. Under "Backup or Restore":
    1. Click "Back up files and settings"
    2. Click "Next"
  6. Under "What to Back Up":
    1. Click "Let me choose what to back up"
    2. Click "Next"
  7. Under "Items to Back Up":
    1. Next to "My Computer", click its plus sign [+]
      1. (Santa Rosa lab classroom only:  Find drive "(T:)", and then click its plus sign [+]. Then: )
      2. Next to the "My Documents" folder, click its plus sign [+]
        1. Next to "Practice Files" folder, click its check-box [  ] (not the plus sign!)
        2. A blue check-mark should appear in the "Practice Files" check-box.
      3. Click "Next"
  8. Under "Backup Type, Destination, and Name" :
    1. At the bottom, under "Type a name for this backup", type:  Practice1
    2. Above, under "Choose a place to save your backup":
    3. If it does not display your USB flash drive:
      1. Click "Browse"
      2. If you see "Please insert a disk into drive A:", then click "Cancel"
      3. In the "Save As" dialog box:
        1. On the left, click "My Computer"
        2. On the right, click the icon for your USB flash drive
        3. On the lower right, click "Open"
        4. At the top, make sure "Save in:" shows your USB flash drive
        5. On the lower right, click "Save"
    4. Click "Next"
  9. Under "Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard":
    1. Do NOT click "Finish" yet!
    2. Click "Advanced"
      1. Under "Type of Backup":
        1. Select "Normal"
        2. Click "Next"
      2. Under "How to Back Up":
        1. Click to put a check in the box next to "Verify data after backup"
        2. ("Use hardware compression" is not available)
        3. Leave the check box blank next to "Disable volume shadow copy"
        4. Click "Next"
      3. Under "Backup Options":
        1. Click "Append this backup to the existing backups"
        2. Click "Next"
      4. Under "When to Back Up"
        1. Click "Now"
        2. Click "Next"
    3. Read the backup settings to confirm they match the above steps
      1. If any settings don't match, click "Advanced," and then repeat the above steps
    4. Click "Finish"
  10. Watch the Backup Progress dialog box
    1. Click "Report..." to open the backup log
      1. Check for errors
      2. Close the backup log window
    2. In the Backup Progress dialog box, click "Close"
