Most of the links in this course's web pages
open a separate window, which you can close afterwards and return to the
previous page. Other web browsers, such as Firefox,
Google Chrome,
and Opera, conveniently
open the links in new tabs, but Internet Explorer and Apple Safari don't.
By default,they open each link in a whole new window, cluttering your
desktop. So, make them open the links in new tabs like other browsers
by using the instructions in the links above.

Welcome to Introduction to UNIX & Linux! This is a
single combined classroom/online course with multiple section numbers,
either designated "online" or "lecture." However, it doesn't matter which section
number you enrolled in. They're all the same -- taught in a classroom and online,
at the same time: your instructor broadcasts the classroom lectures
live on the web, and later puts recordings of the lectures on the Modules page of your course material on the Cisco Networking Academy site.
You may attend either way at any time, including coming to the
classroom one week and attending online the next, either live or recorded. Here's
how to get started:
- By the start of the semester, your instructor will add your account to the Linux Essentials course material on the Cisco Networking Academy, so you can log in and begin working.
- If you already have a Cisco Networking Academy or Cisco Netspace account from a previous course, please use that user name and password to log in.
- If you do not have a previous Cisco Networking Academy account, look for a course invitation email by the start of the course. You may see a Subject line containing "Cisco NetSpace Login Information". Follow the directions to establish your user name and password. If you do not find an invitiation email, even in your Junk or Spam folder, please contact your intstructor immediately.
- Read the Course Information.
- Read the Assignments & Exams Schedule.
- Obtain
a new account on the Student server student.santarosa.edu. See Student
Server Account Application below.
- Get a secure terminal
program, so you can work at the Student server's Linux command line.
- Launch the CCC Confer Readiness Wizard, to prepare yourself and your computer
for the online recorded lectures.
- In the Cisco Networking Academy course material, open the Modules section for the assignments and lecture recordings.
Student
Server Account Application
As part of your practice, you may use a remote Linux command
line to the SRJC Student server, which runs the CentOS distribution. The Student server assigns
you a user name and password.
