Backup Practice:  Restore

Lose one file and get it back:

  1. Open the "My Documents" folder
  2. Open the "Practice Files" folder
  3. Delete a file that was in your Incremental Backup
  4. Insert USB flash drive (or your last diskette)
  5. Launch Windows Backup:   Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup
  6. "Backup or Restore Wizard" starts
    1. Click "Next"
  7. Under "Backup or Restore":
    1. Click "Restore files and settings"
    2. Click "Next"
  8. Under "What to Restore":    Next to "File" , click its plus sign [+]
    1. Next to "Practice1.bkf", click its plus sign [+]
    2. Santa Rosa lab classroom:
      1. Find the second drive "(T:)" (your incremental backup), and then click its plus sign [+]
      2. Next to the "My Documents" folder, click its plus sign [+]
      3. Next to "Practice Files" folder, click its plus sign [+]
      4. Find the file you deleted, and click its check-box [  ] (not the plus sign!).  A blue check-mark should appear in the check-box.
    3. Petaluma lab classroom:
      1. Find the second drive "(C:)" (your incremental backup), and then click its plus sign [+]
      2. Next to the "Documents and Settings" folder, click its plus sign [+]
      3. Next to the "Student" folder (your regular account's home folder), click its plus sign [+]
      4. Next to the "My Documents" folder, click its plus sign [+]
      5. Next to "Practice Files" folder, click its plus sign [+]
      6. Find the file you deleted, and click its check-box [  ] (not the plus sign!).  A blue check-mark should appear in the check-box.
    4. Click "Next"
  9. Under "Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard":
    1. Do NOT click "Finish" yet!
    2. Click "Advanced"
      1. Under "Where to Restore":
        1. Click the drop-down arrow, and then select "Original location"
        2. Click "Next"
      2. Under "How to Restore":
        1. Click "Leave existing files"
        2. Click "Next"
      3. Under "Advanced Restore Options":
        1. Leave all three boxes checked:
          1. "Restore security settings"
          2. "Restore junction points, but not the folders and file data they reference"
          3. "Preserve exisiting volume mount points"
        2. Click "Next"
    3. Read the restore settings to confirm they match the above steps
      1. If any settings don't match, click "Advanced," and then repeat the above steps
    4. Click "Finish"
  10. Watch the Restore Progress dialog box finish
    1. Click "Report..." to open the backup log
      1. Check for errors
      2. NOTE the number of files restored:  it should match the number of files you lost.
      3. Close the backup log window
    2. In the Backup Progress dialog box, click "Close"

 

Lose all your data and get it back:

  1. Open the "My Documents" folder
  2. Delete the whole "Practice Files" folder
  3. Insert USB flash drive

        • A blue check-mark should appear in each check-box.
    3. Petaluma lab classroom:
      1. Next to both drive "(C:)" icons (your full & incremental backups), click the check-boxes [  ] (not the plus signs)
        • A blue check-mark should appear in each check-box.
    4. Click "Next"
  8. Under "Completing the Backup or Restore Wizard":
    1. Do NOT click "Finish" yet!
    2. Click "Advanced"
      1. Under "Where to Restore":

        1. Click "Replace existing files if they are older than the backup files"
        2. Click "Next"
      3. Under "Advanced Restore Options":
        1. Leave all three boxes checked:
          1. "Restore security settings"
          2. "Restore junction points, but not the folders and file data they reference"
          3. "Preserve exisiting volume mount points"
        2. Click "Next"
    3. Read the restore settings to confirm they match the above steps
      1. If any settings don't match, click "Advanced," and then repeat the above steps
    4. Click "Finish"
