COURSE DESCRIPTION: Overview and implementation of security for personal computers connected to the Internet with broadband cable or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). Topics include privacy, anonymity, communication protocols, file and print sharing, the prevention and detection of intrusion, downloading firewall software and updates from the Internet, developing a security strategy, checking for vulnerability, and other data protection techniques.  (CR/NC option)

RECOMMENDED PREPARATION: You should have a basic familiarity with Windows, Internet Web use, and the components of a computer.

SUPPLIES: (1) Notebook; (2) optional: for the second session, a wireless laptop.

EVALUATION
Pass/No Pass Preferred: Due to the concentrated nature of this course, please use the Registration Web Link to select the P/NP (Pass/No Pass) option during the first session of the course, unless you have a compelling reason otherwise. P/NP (also known as CR/NC, or Credit/No Credit) is not automatic when you enroll in this course; you must specify it.  When you choose P/NP, you will receive a grade based on your class attendance and participation, and you will have no assignments outside of class.

If the system doesn't allow you to change to P/NP because you have exceeded the maximum of 3 units per semester or 12 units for all semesters attended, you may still petition for it with the Petition For Waiver Of College Regulations (PDF file).  SRJC Policy 3.10p permits CR/NC for reasons such as personal interest and job skills preparation.

If you require a letter grade for the course, then you will receive a grade based on the following:

• 40% of the grade for attendance (8 hours of attendance is required for a grade.)
• 30% of the grade on classroom participation (30% is subjective, based on staying on task with the instructor, or helping others to stay on task with the instructor.)
• 30% of the grade based on a college-level report, submitted within four calendar days after the end of the class, and with these requirements:
  • Between 1600 and 2200 words (which usually comes out to about 4 pages single-spaced).
  • Mark your report clearly with the instructor name, class name, section number, and your name.
  • Save as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file -- not as a Word document (.doc), or any other proprietary format.
  • Convey your report file to your instructor online, either (1) as an e-mail attachment, or (2) upload the file to Internet-accessible storage space, and then e-mail a link to your instructor at the address given above.
  • Possible project reports:
    1. Summarize information presented in this course.
    2. Describe how you will use information from this class in the future.
    3. A combination of the above.
    4. A special research topic agreed upon in advance by you and the instructor.
  • If you do not submit a report, and you opt for a letter grade, then you will receive a maximum grade of C (70%), based on your class attendance and participation, as described above.  If you opt for Pass/No Pass (see above), this would translate to a grade of P (Pass).
