Ports
Supplements the IP address number
Logical access channel number into the computer
Each port number connects to a specific program or background service.
“Well Known Ports” reside below number 1024. For example:
80 - HTTP (Web service: HyperText Transport Protocol)
110 - POP (Incoming e-mail: Post Office Protocol)
143 - IMAP (Incoming e-mail: Internet Message Access Protocol)
25 - SMTP (Outgoing e-mail: Simple Mail Transport Protocol)
Port numbers above 1024 (up to 65535), including
Registered
&
Private
ports, are utilized for various programs and connections.
