Private Replies

In this course, we use a message list to ask questions about homework and lecture, share information, and discuss course content.  If you would raise your hand in a classroom about it, post it to this message list.  Here are some guidelines.

Posting a Message

To post a new message, use the web input page, instead of your email program.  You'll need to enter your CATE user name and password to reach the form.  If you don't remember it, use the CATE Password Reminder page.

For your Subject line, make a headline for your question or comment.

You and everyone else in the course will receive a copy of the message by email.

Replying

However, you cannot reply or send a message to the list from your email program. To reply to a previous message, use the web archive page.

Contacting Your Instructor

If you need a response from your instructor, and it's the sort of question for which you'd raise your hand in a classroom, send a message to the message list.

If the issue is personal or private, please send a separate e-mail message directly to your instructor's e-mail address.

If you have a time-dependent issue, and you need a response the same day, please telephone your instructor.

How To Read The List Archives

To get previous messages that you may have missed (including a copy of one of your own postings, if you didn't receive it back), go to the Message List Archives.  You'll need to enter your CATE user name and password.

For more guidance, please see the general Message List Help page.

Private Replies

In your e-mail application, if you try to just use your "Reply" function to send a private reply to someone's message on the message list, it just sends to a private account owned by your instructor.

How do you make a private reply to someone else?  Here are two ways:

1. Reply to the message as usual, BUT then erase the address in the "To:" header, and then copy and paste the real address of your intended recipient.

- or better -

2. Don't even reply at all! Instead, make a new blank message, copy & paste your recipient's address into the new "To:" header, and proceed. That way, you don't have to remember to erase the message list address, and you avoid treating your instructor to inadvertently interesting personal details...
