Windows Malware Removal Practice

Restart into "Safe Mode with Networking"

  1. Click Start -> Turn Off Computer (or Shut Down) -> Restart
  2. When the screen goes black, start tapping the function key F8 about twice a second, until the black-and-white "Windows Advanced Options Menu" or "Advanced Boot Options" menu appears.
  3. Tap the down-arrow to select "Safe Mode with Networking" and then tap the Enter key.
  4. Once the Safe Mode desktop appears, close the Safe Mode explanation window, either by clicking"Yes" or the corner X to close.

Install and Run an Anti-Malware Application

  1. For our demonstration, download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware setup.
  2. Aceept all the setup defaults, including update and launch when finished installation.
  3. Maximize the window, so you can see all the buttons.
  4. Select "Perform quick scan" (at home, select "full scan" if you have time).
  5. Click "Scan" to begin scanning.  Expect about 1/2 hour for a Quick Scan; several hours for a Full Scan.
  6. If the program finds any malware, remove it.
  7. Restart your computer into normal mode.
