Windows XP Limited User Account Practice
Make a new Administrator-Level Account:
- Open User Accounts
- Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts
- Click "Create a new account"
- Under "Type a name for the new account", type:
MyAdmin
- Under "Pick an account type," click "Computer
administrator"
- Under "Pick a task..." click on the new "MyAdmin"
account icon
- Under "What do you want to change about MyAdmin's account?"
click "Create a password"
- Under "Create a password for MyAdmin's account":
- Type a new password (and remember it!)
- Type the new password again to confirm
- (Optional) Type a word or phrase to use as a password
hint
- Click "Create Password"
- At the top of the window, click "Home"
Activate the Guest Account:
- Look for the Guest suitcase icon
- If it is gray, and it displays "Guest account is
off", then:
- Click on the Guest account icon
- Under "Do you want to turn on the guest account?",
click "Turn On the Guest Account"
- The Guest suitcase icon should be colored, and display
"Guest account is on"
Change your account to Limited
- Log off:
- Normal log-off:
- Click Start -> Log Off
- Click Log Off again
- If your lab computer doesn't have Log Off:
- Click Start -> Run
- Enter:
logoff
- Click MyAdmin
- Enter the password for MyAdmin
- Open User Accounts
- Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts
- Click "Change an account"
- Click your regular account
- Click "Change the account type"
- Click "Limited"
- Click "Change Account Type"
Log back into your regular account
- Log off (see above)
- Click the icon for your regular account
- Enter your regular account's password, if any
Test your programs
- Launch each of your important programs and make sure they
work
- If any important program does not work, or if you
want to change your regular account back for any reason:
- Log off and log on as MyAdmin, as above
- Change your account back to "Computer Administrator"
- Log off and log back on to your regular account
